BARDA Orders 500,000 More Smallpox Vaccine Doses From Bavarian Nordic Against Monkeypox
As increased cases of monkeypox are being reported in the United States, the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) has ordered an additional 500,000 additional doses of Bavarian Nordic’s Jynneos smallpox and monkeypox vaccine.
BARDA previously ordered 1.4 million doses of Jynneos, which were supplied in 2020, making the total of doses available in the U.S. almost two million doses.
Jynneos is a traditional vaccine that uses a live, nonreplicating copy of the smallpox virus to generate antibodies that protect against infection. It is the only FDA-approved vaccine against monkeypox.
About JYNNEOS
In 2019, FDA licensed JYNNEOS, a replication-deficient MVA vaccine, for prevention of smallpox or monkeypox disease in adults aged ≥18 years determined to be at high risk for infection with these viruses. JYNNEOS is administered by subcutaneous injection as a 2-dose series delivered 28 days apart. The effectiveness of JYNNEOS was inferred from the immunogenicity of JYNNEOS in clinical studies and from efficacy data from animal challenge studies. Occurrences of serious adverse events are expected to be minimal because JYNNEOS is a replication-deficient virus vaccine.
